Abstract

Objective: Determine the relationship between ultrasound, cytological and histopathological characteristics of group III and V thyroid lesions.

Subjects and Study methods: The cross-sectional and retrospective descriptive study was performed on 74 diagnosed cases of thyroid cytology as group III, V at the Department of Pathology, 175 Military Hospital from September 2019 to May 2020 with results of thyroid ultrasound and histopathological results.

Results: The comparison of suspect features on ultrasound with histopathological results found that the features height greater than width had the highest malignancy rate. At the same time, the difference in TIRADS resolution of thyroid nodules on ultrasound between the two groups with benign and malignant histopathological results was statistically significant (p <0.05). Comparing the cytological results with histopathology shows that the malignancy rate of group V and III thyroid nodules is quite high (82.1% and 66.7%). In the group of benign histopathology, the folicullar thyroid adenoma accounts for about 50%, this type of lesion is indicated for surgery. Comparison ultrasound with cytology and histopathology showed that the thyroid nodules TIRADS 5 and diagnosis of group V cytology had the highest malignancy rate (59.44%).

Conclusions: Surgery indications for thyroid nodules should be considered with a diagnosis of group III cytology.
