Abstract

Depression is a common mental disorder that affect patient’s activities in life. The patient’s awareness of the signs of the problem can affect how early treatment starts as well as the effectiveness of treatment.

Objectives: Survey on disease awareness of depressed patients examined at the Psychiatric Clinic, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and related factors.

Subjects and research methods: Cross-sectional study described 139 patients with depression at the Psychiatric Clinic, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy hospital from January 2021 to April 2021. The patient is diagnosed according to the primary depressive episode diagnostic standard of DSM-5. Insight and related factors are harnessed through a set of pre-structured questions.

Result: The average age of the patients involved in the study was 41.8 years. 54.0% of patients knew they were depressed, 34.5% knew the illness but did not think they were depressed, and 11.5% completely denied the illness. Regarding the effects of the illness, 20.1% found not impacted, 45.3% found somewhat impacted, 24.5% was highly impacted and 10.1% was extremely high impacted. There is a statistically significant connection between illness perception and status. The effects of depression on patients include losing interest, guilt and suicidal thoughts.

Conclusion: While symptoms of depression appear in nearly all patients, nearly half of depressed patients deny having depression. Patients who know they have depression have a higher incidence of depression, suggesting that patients only have access to medical and treatment when the illness is already severe.
