Abstract

Introduction: Tongue and floor of mouth cancers are the most common cancers - about 50% of cancers in the head and neck. An extensive operation of the tumor lead to a large defect in the tongue and the floor of mouth. The infrahyoid myocutaneous flap is used to recontruct these defects.

Objectives:To initially evaluate the effectiveness of using infrahyoid myocutaneous flap at 175 Military Hospital in reconstruction of tongue and mouth defects after cancer operation.

Subjects and methods: 8 patients with tongue and floor of mouth cancer who operated cancer, reconstructed the defect by using the infrahyoid myocutaneous flap at the Maxillofacial Department - 175 Military Hospital from October 2018 to October 2020.

Results: There are no cases of total flap loss, partial flap loss are 2 cases. All patients evaluated about swallowing and speech after surgery were partially affected, no patients were severely affected, no recured patients.

Conclusion: The infrahyoid myocutaneous flap under the initially evaluation has some advantages in reconstruction of defects in both the tongue and the floor of mouth.
