Abstract

Objectives: Survey of dietary characteristics and factors associated with the prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized patientsat 175 Military Hospital in order to obtain data for quality improvement of nutrition activities in the hospital.

Subjects and Methods: Cross-sectional observation study on 412 hospitalized patients at Military Hospital 175 from July to September 2017.

Results: The prevalence of malnutrition was 41,5% according to SGA (Subjective Global Assessement) and mid – arm – circumference (MAC), and following BMI (Body Mass Index) was 19,4%. The prevalence of malnutrition of males was higher than females, and this pattern continued with the elder compared to younger or the chronic diseases in comparison with the acute. The percentage of malnutrition in patients increased with the length of hospital stay. The patients having below basic metabolic rate (BMR) dietary intake, which made up 32,9%, were tend to be malnutrition more than the other having sufficient or above BMR intake, as well as people with anorexia were likely to be malnutrition more than well-nourished group. 72,6% of patients had undiversified diet, and only 1,8% patients consumed diet in hospital.

Conclusions: the prevalence of malnutrition was 41,5% and 19,4%, according to SGA and BMI, respectively. The factors associated with nutritional status of patients were: gender, age, pathology, length of hospital stay. 32,9% of patients have below BMR intake, and 72.6% of patients consumed undiversified diet.
