Abstract

Objective: To understand the knowledge and current practice of breastfeeding among postpartum mothers.

Participants and research methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 670 postpartum mothers admitted to the Obstetrics Department of Military Hospital 4 from January to May 2022.

Results: 100% of the postpartum mothers were aware of the benefits of breastfeeding, with the highest percentage (56.85%) considering it beneficial for both mother and baby. 62.24% of the mothers perceived formula feeding as more expensive compared to breastfeeding. 14.33% of the mothers believed that the optimal weaning time for infants was between 6 to 12 months. 70% of the mothers recognized that having a well-balanced diet was important to increase breast milk production. 51.04% of the mothers acquired knowledge about breastfeeding from healthcare professionals. The majority of the mothers were aware of the benefits of colostrum and early initiation of breastfeeding.
