Abstract

Objective: describe the current situation of smoking among high school students in Tan Binh district and analyze some relationships with smoking behaviors in this group of people.

Subjects and methods: cross-sectional study of 1,402 students attending high school at educational institutions in Tan Binh district.

Results: 9.9% of students have ever used tobacco products with the average age of first use being 15 years old. Current tobacco use in the past month is 4.7%, of which 3.7% use e-cigarettes. Research has found a number of factors about socio-demographic characteristics and families with smokers that are related to the smoking rate of students. In addition, seeing people smoking in school and being introduced to cigarettes by friends and relatives increases the smoking rate of students.

Conclusion: It is necessary to continue to coordinate closely between health agencies, educational institutions and local departments and unions in communication work to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco among high school students.
