Abstract

Background: The Digit Span Test (DST) is frequently used as neuropsychological assessment to evaluate several cognitive domains including attention, working memory and short-term memory. The normative value of this test varies from country to country and is influenced by age, gender and education. There is a lack of research on the cultural validity of this test, particular in the Vietnamese older population.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to provide the normative data for DST in the Vietnamese population aged 40 years and older and determine the contribution of age, gender and education to performance of DST.

Methods: Cross-sectional study on 59 community-dwelling volunteers aged 40 years and older with normal cognition at 30-4 Hospital. Results: The mean scores of Digit Span Forward (DSF) and Digit Span Backward (DSB) were 8,92 ± 1,93 and 6,09 ± 2,4, respectively. Age and education were found to be significantly related to performance of DSF. Education was the only factor associated with DSB results.

Conclusion: Normative data of DST in cognitive assessment and how they were affected by age, sex and education were established to determine cut-off values of mild cognitive impairment in the Vietnamese older population.
