Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is a common neurological disease. Impaired memory function contributes to increasing the severity of epilepsy, affecting the patient’s quality of life. In epileptic patients with poly-therapy, many factors affect memory function.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the prevalences and features of memory disorders, and clinical factors effected memory disorders in people with epilepsy with polytherapy treatment

Methods: The case series study was conducted from December 2020 to June 2021, included forty-five patients with epilepsy were treatment with two or more AEDs in neurology department. Patients, ≥18 years old, treated in more than 3 months, no recent seizures, were included in this study. Eligible participants were clinically interviewed information, assessed memory by immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition digit span forward, digit span backward.

Results: Forty-five participants (24 male and 21 female) were recruited. The mean age (±SD) was 37.7±13.8 years. In this study, 33.3% participants was identified as memory disorders; and 46.7% was with attention disorders. The year of education, age, age of onset, combination with topiramate significantly related to memory disorders. There is no relevant between year of epilepsy, number of AED and AED generation to domain of memory.

Conclusion: Memory disorders were common in people with epilepsy with polytherapy. Correlated factors are year of education, age, age of onset, combination with topiramate
