Abstract

Background: Gastrointestinal tract perforation due to foreign bodies is an uncommon emergency surgery; its clinical manifestations are so diverse that the correct clinical diagnosis is rarely made. Early diagnosis helps minimize complications and consequences.

Objectives: Describe the clinical characteristics, risk factors, type of foreign bodies and surgical treatment results of cases of gastrointestinal perforation due to foreign bodies.

Materials and methods: Research on a series of cases undergoing surgery to remove perforated foreign bodies at Military Hospital 175 from June 2019 to August 2023.

Results: In the 32 recorded cases, the median age was 50 years old with age ranging from 11 to 88. No cases of esophageal perforation were recorded, 32 cases were all located in the stomach and intestines with ileal perforation (50%). The most common type of foreign body is fish bone (65,6%). Abdominal CT-scan has high value in detecting foreign bodies (75%). Most patients had surgery and were discharged from the hospital in a stable condition, with no complications or mortality.

Conclusion: Gastrointestinal tract perforation due to FBs is uncommon, but it has a large variety of clinical manifestations. Most patients accidentally swallow foreign objects, and the main damage is perforation of the stomach and small intestine. Surgery is a radical, highly effective and safe treatment method.
