Abstract

Objective: Study clinical features of generalized anxiety disorders in irritable bowel syndrome patients.

Subject and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study of 163 patients diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome treated at Military Hospital 175 from June 2022 to March 2023.

Results: The proportion of male patients is 58.3%. The age group ≥ 40 accounts for 80%. The average age of the subject group is 55.7 ± 15.7 years. The prevalent rate of anxiety disorder is 30.1%, severe level is 34.7%, moderate level is 38.8% and mild level is 26.5%. Sleep disturbance is seen in 100% of patients, the rate of being easily fatigued, restlessness, difficulty concentrating is in the range from 73.4% to 87.7%, irritability and muscle tension account for 26.6% and 24.5%, respectively.

Conclusion: Clinical features of anxiety disorders in irritable bowel syndrome patients are useful for clinicians understanding of the disorders, supporting diagnosis and treatment generally and effectively.
