Abstract

Introduction: Perforated peptic ulcers (PPUs) count among the most frequent emergency conditions globally. The advantages of the laparoscopic approach in PPUs are well-established, however laparoscopic intracorporeal suturing is time-consuming and requires skills of surgeon. Use of barbed suture for peptic ulcer perforation, especially in laparoscopic surgery has facilitated reducing operative time and simplify the implementation technique.

Purpose: Describe characteristic of peptic ulcer perforation and assess the outcomes of surgical treatment with barbed suture.

Subjects and methods: Patients who were operated for perforated peptic ulcers at Cho Ray Hospital between April 2020 and April 2021.

Results: During the study period, 119 patients have presented with PPUs and underwent emergency surgery for PPUs with barbed suture. The mean length of stay after surgery was 6.7 ± 3.1 days. The percentage of duodenal ulcers remained the most common perforations with 54.6%, average diameter was 10.6 ± 7.6 mm. The mean prevalence of is 43.7% and chronic inflammatory ulcer is about 46.2%.

Conclusions: For perforation of a benign peptic ulcer with peritonitis, surgical treatment with barbed suture is feasible and safe, with less postoperative discomfort, and decrease the length of stay in hospital.
