Abstract

Background: Osteoporosis is a disease with high prevalence in the elderly and postmenopausal women. The diagnosis of osteoporosis is currently based on bone density measurement. However, the number of patients diagnosed before the consequences occur is still low, especially bone fractures.

Objectives: Determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in patients aged 50 and older in Buon Ma Thuot city in 2024.

Materials and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 261 patients aged 50 and older who visited the examination department of The Central Highlands Regional General Hospital. Osteoporosis was diagnosed using the DEXA method.

Results: A survey of 261 patients with an average age of 66.4 ± 7.7 years, women accounted for the majority with 62.5%, the overall prevalence of osteoporosis rate was 36%. The prevalence of women osteoporosis is 49.1%, higher than male patients with 14.3%, OR = 5.78 (confidence interval 95% (CI): 2.95 - 11.88), p < 0.0001. Female patients had an osteoporosis rate when measured at the lumbar spine of 47.9%, higher than when measured at the femoral neck of 21.5%. The prevalence of osteoporosis increased with age, with 23.9% of patients aged 50-59 years and the highest in those aged ≥ 80 years with 75% (p=0.009).

Conclusion: The overall prevalence of osteoporosis was 36.0%. Osteoporosis status differed by gender, age, and measurement site.
