Abstract

Objective: To examine the relationship between osteoporosis and disease stage, level of activity and corticosteroids using in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Subjects and method: Prospective, cross-sectional study conducted in 65 rheumatoid arthritis patients being treated in military hospital 175. Criteria in reseach: Disease stage according to Steinbroker classification; disease activity according to DAS28, Ritchie, ESR, VAS; osteoporosis according to WHO classification.

Results: The frequence of osteoporosis at measurement were 38,5% at lumbar spine and 41,5% at femoral neck.

Late disease stage (III and IV) increases the odds of osteoporosis at lumbar spine by 13,62 times (p < 0,001; 95%CI: 3,46 – 53,62; at femoral neck by 2,93 times (p < 0,05; 95%CI: 1,03-8,33) compared to early disease stage. Corticosteroids using increases the odds of osteoporosis at lumbar spine by 4,92 times (p < 0,05; 95%CI: 1,01 – 24,29) compared to corticosteroids-naive patients.

Conclussion: In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, late disease stage and corticosteroids using increase the odds of osteoporosis.
