Abstract

Objective: To survey on out-of-hospital falls among elderly inpatients in Geriatrics and Palliative care department at Univeristy Medical Center at Ho Chi Minh City (UMC HCMC).

Object and methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in 250 elderly adults (aged 60 years and above) in Geriatrics and Palliative care department at UMC HCMC from December, 2020 to June, 2021. We collected data on demographic characteristics, history of the out-of-hospital falls and other related factors within 12 months prior to hospital admission.

Results: The rate of out-of-hospital falls within 12 months was 21.6%, among this number, the rate of hospitalization for falls accounted for 16.8% and the consequence of falls in this group with the highest rate was lower extremity bone fractures with 45.2%, the lowest was upper extremity bone fractures accounted for 4.8%. Factors related to lower the rate of falls that included using of a mobility aid (OR = 0,40; 95%CI: 0,20 – 0,80, p = 0,041) and medical advice on preventing fall (OR = 0,18; 95%CI: 0,16 – 0,20, p = 0,046), while diabetes type 2 (OR = 2,17; 95%CI: 1,49 – 9,61, p = 0,044) and using NSAIDs (OR = 1.93; 95%CI: 1,54 – 2,40, p = 0,047) increase the rates of falls.

Conclusions: The rate of out-of-hospital falls in elderly patients is quite high. Therefore, attention should be paid to better prevention of falls in the elderly, towards the goal of healthy aging. As a result, this research also brings meaningful value for medical system, especially family medicine network.
