Abstract

Background: Surgical site infection is one of the four common types of hospital-acquired infections. It prolongs hospital stays, increases treatment costs, and is a leading cause of death in surgical patients worldwide. Prophylactic antibiotic use (KSDP) is one of the preventive measures against UTIs. To evaluate the effectiveness of KSDP, we started to apply KSDP in surgery at the Institute of Trauma and Orthopedics, Military Hospital 175.

Objective: To evaluate the level of compliance and cost of using KSDP in the departments of the orthopedic institute.

Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study from October 23, 2020 to December 31, 2020

Results: Prophylactic antibiotic use rate accounted for 53.9% of clean surgeries. The main prophylactic antibiotic used was Cefalosporin generation I and II. The types of surgery to replace joints, skull and spine are not yet applied KSDP. The cost for KSDP of clean surgeries helps reduce 14 times compared to the cost of using antibiotic treatment.

Conclusion: The rate of adherence to KSDP is not uniform among departments in orthopedic institutes. Using KSDP actually reduces the cost of treatment. This program must be maintained and extended to other surgeries.
