Abstract

Total knee replacement surgery is considered as a treatment of choice in patients with knee osteoarthritis, especially in patients with severe knee osteoarthritis where conservative treatment have been failed. Total knee replacement gives good pain relief, well recovers function.

Objectives: to evaluated the results of total knee replacement surgery at 175 Military Hospital.

Materials & methods: retrospective study, data are represented by descriptive statistics SPSS 26.0 soft –ware.

Subjects: 47 total knee replacement were performed for 40 patients at Orthopeadic Institue of Military Hospital 175, 19 knees with patellar resurfacing and 28 knees without patellar resurfacing. Patients were evaluated with the Knee Society Clinical Rating System (KSS).

Results: At an average of 26 months follow – up, knee function is improved clearly with KSS increasing. The mean preoperative and postoperative KFS improved from 37.75±10,97 to 81±15,45, respectively (p<0,05). KFS grade of excellent: 62,5%, good: 17,5%, moderate: 15%, and poor: 5%. Postoperatively, 53,19% of knees were no pain, 46,81% of knees were slight pain. The mean preoperative and postoperative (at the time of the last follow-up) knee flexion angles were 114,890 ± 13,610 and 114,040 ± 10,660, respectively (p<0,05). The average tibiofemoral angle was 1,170±6,460 of varus preoperatively and 3,130±3,050 of valgus at the final follow-up. Complication: 2,13% of knees had superficial infection, 4,26% of knees had patellofemoral pain.

Conclusion: Total knee replacement resulted excellent relief of pain, range of motion, restoration alignment and knee joint function in the the old patiens of severe arthritis knees.
