Abstract

Background: Bipolar disorder (BP) is the most common mental disorder and affects patients’ quality of life. However, studies on BP are limited in Vietnam, specially at Ho Chi Minh City where has been limited to date.

Objection: To determine the prevalence and correlates of BP at a psychiatry outpatient clinic, University of Medicine and Phamacy Center, Ho Chi Minh city.

Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in patients with mood disorder from January to June 2021. The patients completed a questionnaire which included self-report questions about their symptoms.

Results: One hundred and fifty two patients (110 women and 42 men, ages ranging from 18 to 68 years) took part in this study. The prevalence of BP was 36.8%. The sex ratio of bipolar group is about 1:1. The median time of patient from symptoms onset to confirmative diagnosis BP was 27 months (a lower quartile - a higher quartile: 12 – 72 months). While many symptoms were different in both groups, the frequency of symptoms “got much less sleep than usual and found you didn’t really miss it” and “thoughts raced through your head or you couldn’t slow your mind down” were similar in both groups (p=0.428 and p=0.460).

Conclusions: This study demonstrates that BD is a popular mental disorder, but is often under-diagnosed. It is nescessary to conduct more studies to find out appropriate instruments, solutions to early detect BD.
