Abstract

Background: Major depressive disorder is the most common mental disorder in elderly, resulting in heavy burden of disease and a decline in quality of life in this population. However, studies on depression of the elderly inpatients in Vietnam are lacking.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of major depressive disorder in elderly hospitalized patients at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 65 patients at the Geriatric Department and the Internal Medicine Department, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital from January to May 2021. Data were collected through in-person interviews based on a set of SCID-5-RV questionnaire to diagnose depressive episode according to DSM-5.

Results: The prevalence of major depressive disorder in elderly hospitalized patients was 46.1%. There was no significant correlation between the rate of major depressive disorder and other factors including age, sex, occupation, education level, marital status, and number of comorbidities. Among patients with major depressive disorder, the most commonly reported symptoms were sleepless (100%), depressive mood (96.7%).

Conclusions: Hospitalized elderly people are at high risk of depression. There is a need to screen and diagnose these inpatients for appropriate treatments. Moreover, important symptoms such as sleepless should be noted in hospitalized elderly people.
