Abstract

Background: Assessment of activities of daily living (ADL) in cardiac older patients is one of the most important factors of comprehensive geriatric care.

Objectives: Evaluating the association between katz index of activities of daily living and proportion of re-hospitalization of cardiac older patients

Methods: A descriptive longitudinal study on 202 patients aged 60 years old and older who were assessed activities daily living by Katz index at the Department of Cardiology at Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City from May 2020 to May 2021. These patients were monitored for re-admission within 03 months after discharge.

Results: The rate of completely dependent group is 18,8%, partially depent group is 16,8% and independent group is 64,4%. The re-admission rate of the group of patients with a degree of independence was the lowest (9,2%), the proportions of re-hospitalization is higher in the partially dependent group (11,8%) and the highest group was the completely dependent group (52,6%), and the difference is statiscally significant (p < 0,05).

Conclusion: The more independent the patients are, the higher the patient’s rate of re-hospitalization within 3 months.
